From flood mitigation to artistry: The story of salvaged roots

Our "Roots of the Valley" project breathes new life into nature's lost giants. We are creating three massive outdoor wood sculptures from salvaged root systems of old-growth trees. These majestic roots, estimated to be 200–600 years old, were diverted from the landfill after a flood mitigation project in the Drumheller Valley. For the past two years, they have been naturally curing on private land in Rosedale, Alberta, awaiting their artistic rebirth.

Crafting wonders: Our sculpture creations

Working with wood for the first time, artist Dawn Allen is intentionally shifting her practice from controlled carving mediums (stone, clay) to a responsive, unpredictable material shaped by time, environment, and decay. The combination of intentional carving and natural organic shapes will result in an abstract but recognizable animal form.

The artistic focus is not only on representation (lion forms, whale form), but on the tension between imposed form and natural structure—allowing the inherent shape of the root systems to guide the final work. The animal forms serve as symbolic carriers of strength, transition, and adaptation within a changing landscape.

Experience art in the heart of Rosedale

All three unique and original sculptures will find their permanent home at 25 Alberta Pool Road, Rosedale, AB. This property, personally owned by artist Dawn Allen, serves as a hub for community-based arts programming and public engagement. We invite you to witness the transformation of these ancient roots and become part of our artistic journey. 'I believe everyone has the capacity to transform the 'cast off' and undervalued into something extraordinary. Welcome to our workspace.' - Dawn Allen
